Highlights of the day consisted of a Resident Research Competition in which three residents from the Department of Neurosurgery at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health and the New York Medical College competed for a $25,000 research grant awarded by the Neuroscience Research Foundation. The studies were so interesting, the BSSNY neurosurgeon judge panel could not decide on a winner. All three residents were awarded a third of the prize money—$8,333.
Up next came the BSSNY Barracuda Tank competition (modeled after the popular Shark Tank TV show). It was so much fun for all. Three physicians, Dr. Seth Neubardt, Board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Paul Wright, AVP of Neuroscience at Nuvance Health, and Dr. Peter Costantino, Board-certified Otolaryngologist/Head and Neck Surgeon, presented top-notch health-related business ventures to the BSSNY Neurosurgeon judge panel. Dr. Neubardt presented an affordable and reliable replacement for the bone graft materials used today. Dr. Paul Wright has developed an innovative device to reduce hospital noise levels with a self-monitoring device. Dr. Peter Costantino has taken the standard hospital identification band to a whole new, smart technology level. The interesting ideas spurred lots of questions from the judge panel and the audience participation was impressive.
The BSSNY Neuroscience Symposium was centered around educating healthcare professionals on the latest technology and techniques related to Neuroscience. The presentations were brilliant and informative. The research studies and business ventures presented were both entertaining and thought provoking. Overall the day was a great success and BSSNY looks forward to holding this event annually.
